We invite all amateur photographers to submit photos they have taken at Crex Meadows in a contest to be judged at a Nature Photography Weekend August 2nd and 3rd, 2008.

Contest Rules

1)       Who can enter – The contest is for amateurs only, defined as someone who is NOT making their livelihood by their photos.  The photography contest committee will make the final decision if the entrant is an amateur and qualifies for the contest.

2)       Categories – there will be 4 categories; Birds, Other Wildlife, Wildflowers/Plants (Flora), and Landscapes (with or without people in the scene) and each category will be divided into Youth (17 and under) and Adults.

3)       Submission Guidelines –

a)       A maximum of one entry per person per category. 

b)       A fee of $2 per entry will be charged to cover the cost of the awards and for displaying the photos.  Any extra money after the bills are paid will be donated to the Friends of Crex Endowment Fund.  Please include the fee with your submissions.

c)       The entrant must determine on their own which entries they want to submit and which category it fits under – please do not send multiple photos with directions for us to choose which to enter. 

d)       The photograph must have been taken within or directly adjacent to the Glacial Lakes Grantsburg managed properties (Crex Meadows, Fish Lake, Amsterdam Sloughs and Danbury Wildlife Areas). 

e)       The image should represent the natural world in unmodified form (except for cropping, adjustment in lighting, sharpness, etc).  Images which do not appear authentic will not be accepted. 

f)         Photos can have been taken in 2008 or before. 

g)       The person who took the photograph must be the person whose name is on the entry. 

h)       Youth photos may be no larger than 5”X7”

i)         Adult photos may be no larger than 8”X10”. 

j)         Photos should be submitted on photo paper, un-matted and un-framed. 

k)       Photos may be digital or film, but there will be no distinction given in the contest between the formats. 

l)         Submissions should include, on a separate sheet of paper, the photographer’s name, address and telephone number, the category they want it entered in, the title of the photo, and where it was taken.  Youth photo entries should also include the photographer’s age.  (Please remember to include the fee of $2 per photo entry with your submission)  CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD A SUBMISSION FORM

m)     All submissions may be scanned to disk and the photographer grants Friends of Crex, Inc. permission to use the images for advertising, sales items, calendars, on the crexmeadows.org website, etc.  FOC will always give photo credit to all published photos. 

n)       Non-winning photos may be returned to you after the contest if you include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your entries.   Or you may pick up your photos at the Visitor Center after the contest is over.

o)       Submissions should be mailed or brought to:  Friends of Crex, 102 East Crex Ave, Grantsburg, WI 54840 by July 25, 2008.

4)       Display for Voting – FOC will display the submissions for voting at an event to be held August 2.  Exactly how they will be displayed is yet to be determined – depending upon the number of submissions and the display space available.  All efforts will be taken to display the photos in a fair, un-biased manner. 

5)       Prizes – Winners will be announced on Saturday Evening, August 3rd.  There will be a prize for each category and an overall grand prize for best in show.  The winning photo in each category will be mounted onto an engraved plaque and displayed at the Crex Meadows Visitor Center until Spring, 2009.  Afterwards, it will be sent to the winner. 

Professional Photography Exhibition – Although professional photographers do not qualify for the contest, we invite you to submit photos for display in an exhibition of Wildlife Photography.  Photos should be from in or around the Crex Meadows area (GLG properties).  You may bring your photos, ready for display (framed or not) to us in the weeks before the photography weekend on August 2 and 3.  A limit of 5 photos per photographer will be accepted.  You may also decide to donate the photos for sale in our Gift Shop with the proceeds to be used by the Friends of Crex to benefit Wildlife Education.  Photos that were not donated to the gift shop will be returned after the exhibition.

Amateur Videographer Exhibition – The auditorium will be available during the photography weekend August 2 and 3 for amateur videographers to show their short wildlife films to the public.  The subject should be nature-based, any subject, taken at any location.  Please submit your video to the Friends of Crex at 102 East Crex Ave.  Videos will be returned after the exhibition.
