Volunteering

Volunteers play an important role in the ongoing success of Crex Meadows.  They staff the Wildlife Education and Visitor Center on weekends and other busy days from April through October, and help with special events as tour guides, greeters, cooks, and organizers.  They also help clear trails, collate mailings, maintain the prairie in front of the building, and spruce up the building.
You can volunteer in the field, in the building, or behind the scenes. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Kim Wheeer, at (715) 463-2739, or email information@crexmeadows.org, or stop by the Visitor Center when you are in town.   We can't exist without your help!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • JOIN OUR WEED WARRIORS!  We will be conducting a research project testing the effects of hand-pulling Spotted Knapweed in a few different locations in Crex Meadows over the next few years.  Join us in late June and early July.  We need people to help identify and pull the weeds.  Contact Kim Wheeler if you are interested in helping.

  • Interested in helping with the gardening at the Visitor Center?  We could use a few green thumbs to help weed, plant, water, whatever may be needed.  You would be working with our Prairie Garden Volunteer, Alan Roelfs.

  • Are you computer literate?  Able to learn new processes?  We need help with publishing hand-outs, maintaining files, processing photos (on Adobe PhotoShop), etc.  You would be working with Kim Dauer, using Microsft Word, Excel, Access and Publisher.

  • We always need people-greeters at the reception desk in the Visitor Center.  You may staff the center alone or with a spouse or friend.  You will ring-up gift shop sales, give out maps and help visitors plan their route, and answer questions.  You will need a basic knowledge of Crex Meadows and what it has to offer.  The Friends of Crex coordinator, Kim Wheeler, is at the center on most weekends to help.

  • We need people to help maintain trails in Crex Meadows and Fish Lake.  This can be done whenever a volunteer has time.  If you walk the trail and find a blocked area  (i.e. large tree limbs down), please let us know so the Crex Crew can clear it.  Most trails are only mowed in the fall.

Do you have a special talent, interest or skill that you would like to share?  Would you like to donate your time helping others learn about wildlife and plants?  Please contact Kim at 715-463-2739 or email information@crexmeadows.org to discuss your ideas.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS/SERVICE LEARNING

Many schools in the area require their students to earn Service Learning Credits through Community Service.  We have room for you here!  We can put you to work on any of the projects listed above or we can come up with other things for you to do, from building benches for our trails to developing species accounts for our website.  Contact Kim Wheeler at 715-463-2739 or email information@crexmeadows.org to obtain a Student Volunteer Application and to sign up for our Service Learning program.
