CLICK HERE TO GO TO CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Friends of Crex Volunteers
play an important role in the ongoing success of Crex Meadows.
They staff the Wildlife Education and Visitor Center on weekends and
other busy days from April through October and help with the Spring
Birding Festival and the Fall Wildlife Festival as tour guides,
greeters, cooks, and organizers. They help clean up litter and
clear trails in the Wildlife Area and the Visitor Center grounds during
the annual Spring Clean-Up day in April. They help
the
wildlife biologist and operations crew band Trumpeter Swans and Canada Geese in July. A volunteer helps
maintain the crop fields in the refuge, and the prairie plantings
display in from of the Visitor Center was built by and is maintained by
our marvelous volunteers.
All of our volunteers are
invited to an Appreciation Brunch each fall before the Annual Meeting
and are given name badges, shirts and other perks. The volunteer
with the most hours each year is awarded a special prize, and are
given out to the volunteers that attend the brunch.
There are many ways in which
volunteers are needed, and we will try to provide the information here
when opportunities arise. If you are interested in volunteering
for anything specifically or in general, please let us know! All ages
and skill levels are needed for a variety of things. Our Volunteer
Coordinator, Carly Hawkinson, welcomes your call at (715) 463-2739.
Or stop by the Visitor Center when you are in town. We'd love to
hear from you! Remember, we cannot continue to exist without the
help of our volunteers!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
 |
We need people to help
with the Annual Benefit Dinner on March 15th.
Opportunities include helping with registration as the guests
arrive, manning the front desk during the event, helping to set
up the banquet room, and cleaning up the banquet room and
washing the dishes after the event is over. |
 |
We need committee
members to help organize a photography contest and silent
auction this summer at the Crex Meadows Visitor Center. A
brainstorming/planning session will be held Monday night,
February 11th at 6:30 p.m. If you are interested, please
email
kimberlydauer@hotmail.com or just show up for the meeting. |
 |
Our interpreter is in
need of someone to help with school and scout programs.
Girl Scouts will be visiting the Education Center in April.
Please call Carly if you are interested in helping her out.
|
 |
The Annual Crane Count
and Crex Clean Up Day is fast approaching! Look for more
information in the March Newsletter, or check out our
Events page for more information.
We send information out to people who have helped in the past.
If you are new, please contact us and we will be sure to add you
to the list. |
 |
The Spring Birding
Festival will be held May 11. We will need people to lead
bird walks, help in the children's activity room, direct
traffic, help in the mess hall, etc.
|
 |
There are several
events that Crex Meadows staff attend with informational and
interpretive booths, such as the Nature of Amery, Mill Stream
Day, and Big Gust Days. We could use volunteers to help
staff these booths. |
 |
We need people to walk
the various trails throughout Crex Meadows and Fish Lake and
help keep the trails clear. This can be done whenever a
volunteer has time. If you walk the trail and find a
blocked area that you cannot clear yourself, large tree limbs
down, etc. please let us know so the Crex Crew can go out and
clear it. Most trails are only mowed in the fall before
hunting season. |
 |
If
you are interested in helping staff the Visitor Center on
weekends in the spring, summer or fall this year and have not been contacted in
the past, please let us know. Carly will be coordinating
the staffing for the spring soon. Running the Visitor Center is easy
and fun, and very rewarding. You may staff the center alone or with a spouse
or friend. You will run the cash register for the Bog Shoe
gift shop, give out maps and help visitors plan their route
through the Wildlife Area, and answer questions. You do not
need to be an expert birder or have a vast knowledge of the area
plants, just a basic knowledge of Crex Meadows and what it has
to offer. Our staffers come from all over; from St. Croix
Falls, the Twin Cities, Pine, Burnett and Polk Counties and other places in the
Midwest. If you have never staffed the Center in the past
or just need a refresher, we can set aside some time to train
you on how to open and close the building and run the cash
register. The Friends of Crex Membership Coordinator and
Bookkeeper, Kim Dauer, is at the center on most weekends to help
with anything that is needed and to give moral support. |
 |
Do you have a special
talent, interest or skill that you would like to share? Would you
like to donate your time helping others learn about wildlife and
plants in the area? We are looking for good people to help
run wildlife programs at the Wildlife Education and Visitor
Center and to lead or assist with canoe/kayak trips and nature
walks throughout the spring and summer months this year.
Please contact Carly at the number above to discuss your ideas
and volunteer your time. |
