Bounty of the Barrens

A chorus of rails, sparrows, bitterns, and wrens makes Crex Meadows the place to be when the sun rises over northwestern Wisconsin.

As I turned off the alarm at 2 a.m., I briefly wondered what causes a person to decide to forgo six or more hours of sleep. By the looks on my birding buddies' faces, I knew they were thinking the same thing, but after a Big Day pep talk and a jolt of coffee, we were on the back roads of Burnett County, Wisconsin, headed to the fabled pumphouse at Crex Meadows Wildlife Area.

On the 15-minute drive, ace birder Jim Williams and I ran through the birds that we had missed last year on our way to 161 species in the county. My brother Jason was along on his maiden voyage to Crex, and I was convinced that he would bring us new-birder luck. Three jewels of the large sedge meadows greeted us at the refuge. "Le Conte's Sparrow! Sharp-tailed Sparrow! YELLOW RAIL!" my brother not so calmly announced as we exited the car. In a 10-second span, we had heard three species that make the refuge fantastic and draw birders from all over the Midwest. Suddenly, we didn't mind that it was 2:30 a.m. We were alive with the possibilities of another magical day.
